Fishing in Hungary.

Hungary is one of the leading coarse fishing destinations in Europe. The quality of the fishing and quantity of the fish caught is exceptional. In fact the World Fishing Championships were held in Hungary during 2007.

Hungarian Fishing Lake Hungary Lake

Just like the UK, fishing in Hungary is a very popular pastime with over 3% of the population participating. Hungary has warm clean waters which result in big catches, with fish such as Carp, Cat fish, Zander (Pike/Perch),Bream and Pike being caught.
The Hungarian Carp record stands at 68lb and the fish can be seen on video

Fly fishing is less popular than in the UK but several stretches of river can be found in the north of Hungary.
There are numerous tackle shops in the vicinity and as well as an assortment of baits, tackle and licences can be bought ( just like the UK there are national and local water permits which can be bought from the fishing shops ).
Fishing in Lake Balaton, Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake at over 40 times the size of Lake Windermere, can be enjoyed from the shore, jetty, lake platform or small boat. The lake has an average depth of 3.2 metres which means the summer water temperature rises to over 28 deg C on a par with the Caribbean. The warm waters create an environment where the fish spawn and feed regularly.

Another popular destination is Lake Velence situated half way between Budapest and Lake Balaton. In 2007 this was the destination of the World Course Fishing Championships which was won by Italy –
Italy 1st, Belgium 2nd Hungary 3rd. Wales 4th with England 5th
By far the most popular place to fish is on the many thousand smaller lakes situated around the country. Some of the lakes have small wooden chalets on the waters’ edge which can be purchased for less than £1000. The chalets have a small bed and cooking facilities with services connected and come complete with fishing rights for the stretch of water immediately in front of the chalet . One could argue this is several stars higher in standard of accommodation than what the UK fisherman is used to and certainly beats the conventional Bivvy.
